For job seeker Tahlia, community support has helped give her and her children a fresh start in life; and now Tahlia is giving back to her community.
Tahlia came to Community Solutions just before Christmas last year, after leaving a domestic violence situation. She and the two children in her care were living in a women’s shelter and they faced a less than festive time with no home in which to celebrate Christmas, no money for presents and not a lot of joy. Tahlia was under severe stress which was in turn affecting both her physical and mental health.
When Casey Dickinson, met Tahlia, she could see she was a determined and hardworking individual, willing to do whatever she could to provide a stable life for her family.
As soon as Community Solutions’ Support Worker, Casey Dickinson, met Tahlia, she could see she was a determined and hardworking individual, willing to do whatever she could to provide a stable life for her family. Her primary goal was to gain employment to ensure her family had a roof over their head and a place for the girls to feel secure when they started the new school year. Working together, Tahlia and Casey agreed her supportive and caring nature would be a perfect fit for a community organisation where she could use her unique qualities to support others.
To help Tahlia with the job seeking process, Casey and Community Solutions worked with John Dickinson from the Whitsunday PCYC, who generously donated two children’s memberships for Tahlia’s children to temporarily relieve the stress of childcare payments. Community Solutions also helped Tahlia with clothes, counselling and tyres for her car to ensure she had a reliable form of transport. Tahlia’s commitment teamed with Community Solutions’ support resulted in her gaining part time work with Endeavour, a perfect fit for her caring nature.
As a result of stable, fulfilling employment, Tahlia’s future is looking bright. Not only is she feeling less stressed, Tahlia has told us she is feeling physically and mentally stronger and is providing a positive home environment for her family.
Tahlia is thriving in her role at Endeavour and six months on she has increased her weekly hours. She has also begun to undertake training in disability support to expand her capacity to move into a more advanced role in the future. Tahlia was so appreciative of Casey’s support and was impressed with the professionalism and active work Community Solutions provides on a day to day basis.
