During her first meeting with Community Solutions’ Employment Consultant, Casey Dickinson, it was clear Joy had lost confidence in herself and her abilities as an employee and told Casey she felt “everyone was out to get her”. Her home life was unstable as she was constantly moving and she suffered from depression and anxiety as well as a dependency on drugs.

Despite her lack of confidence, Casey observed that Joy was also bubbly, bright and fun and just wanted to be given a chance to prove herself.
Casey, knowing what it is like to be in a job seeker’s shoes and the barriers that need to be overcome, was immediately on Joy’s team. She saw that with some moral support and targeted assistance, Joy could be a valuable employee. Casey organised appropriate clothing and shoes for Joy to wear to interviews, as well as help with her ID and transport.

She also arranged for Joy to undertake employment workshops and master classes, and provided Joy with guidance like interview tips and techniques. To assist with building confidence and job prospects in the administration field, Casey organised for Joy to begin study towards her Certificate 3 in Business.
All this hard work on the pair’s behalf paid off: Joy gained part-time employment with Community Solutions and found herself on the other side of the counter! The new role gave Joy a sense of purpose and pride and, given where she began, she displayed a great deal of empathy and respect for all Community Solutions clients. As a result of gaining employment, Joy reported that her anxiety and depression have reduced and she and thanked Casey so much for “believing in me and getting me a job here”.

The future continues to brighten for Joy, who has since moved on to a bigger and better role with a uniform and sign-writing business. She and Casey will continue to work together to ensure she completes her Cert 3 in Business, gains her Learners license and continues to build her skills for future positions.
