David had been unemployed for over a year when he met with Community Solutions’ Employment Consultant, Casey Dickinson. They talked through his history together and found there were many reasons David had been unable to find and sustain employment. David suffered from PTSD along with depression and anxiety. He had been dependant on drugs, including methamphetamine, for over 20 years, was isolated, lonely and had very little money.
David told Casey he was keen to undertake any kind of employment, but had a preference for outdoor and ‘hands-on’ work. He felt positive and optimistic that he could overcome his barriers and create a fresh start for himself. With this admirable attitude to work with, Casey got started building support around David and helped him take solid steps on his own path to success.

There were many obstacles to overcome but Casey’s step by step approach helped David take ownership over his goals, whilst still feeling a strong sense of support and partnership from his case worker. Casey organised for David to undertake formal and informal training to broaden his perspectives and employability. David attained his White Card and began his Certificate 3 in Business as well as taking part in Work Connections and Reverse Marketing sessions run by Community Solutions. David got job-ready by participating in mock interviews, receiving help with his resume and job applications as well as the purchase of job interview clothes, transport and fuel.

It wasn’t long before David received the amazing news he had been successful in attaining a position through Acclaim Apprentices and Trainees PTY LTD and Casey made sure he was ready for the role with the purchase of hi-vis work clothes, steel capped boots and safety equipment.
David’s new job has given him the monetary freedom to purchase his own car, leaving him less isolated and able to be a reliable and punctual employee. He is continuing to study towards his Cert 3 and says that he is no longer using drugs and is feeling positive his PTSD is under control. David is also looking forward to making new friends at his workplace.

Through her persistence, empathy and positivity, Casey was able to help David take control of his life and give him the tools to create the future he imagined. And the hard work didn’t go unnoticed - David recently contacted Casey and Community Solutions saying: “I can’t thank you enough for all the hard work and stress I have put you guys through. I really do appreciate everything you have done. You guys have been the best (service) provider I’ve been too. If you guys didn’t help me with getting a job and clothing and all the support and assistance I wouldn’t have been able to start work.”
Congratulations David and Casey!
